There's lots of research happening in this important area. As a charity we are keen to support this and to publicise it as much as possible.

The University of Brighton are hoping to do some research into the identification and response to disability hate crime with Sussex Police. And AWARE is part of the reason they have decided to put in a submission to the Safer in Sussex Community Fund.

This potential project wants to try and document front line Sussex Police staff experiences of recognising, recording and processing disability hate crime and incidents as well as identifying areas of best practice along with key challenges associated with recognising, recording and processing disability hate crime and incidents. And the outcome will hopefully facilitate Sussex Police and their community partners to reflect upon all of the potential findings and then formulate recommendations that could benefit victims of Disability Hate Crime.

It's sounds complex but it isn't. It is, if this research gets the funding, taking its cue from the likes of AWARE and AWARE is all about reporting, this project is about taking that reporting one step further.

AWARE is a project that has been set up to help people with learning difficulties report hate crime in a safe and supportive environment. People can come along to Cafe Oyster every Wednesday to the All Saints Arts Centre, Friars Walk, Lewes from 1130 hours until 1330 hours or on a Friday at The Chapel Cafe, Westgate, High Street, Lewes were trained volunteers and on a Wednesday police officers/PCSO'S are available to talk to.

With disability hate crime in the public eye disabled people in Lewes, East Sussex have taken the initiative against it and set up a year long project to educate and connect victims with local police officers working in this field.

And with funding from the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne the AWARE project will deliver two drop in surgeries each week where police officers, PCSOs and hate crime specialists can have direct but informal contact with the disabled community.  Each surgery is at community cafes run by the Queen’s Award holding Oyster Project charity based in Lewes.

John Russell, founder and trustee director of the disability self-help charity said: ”We knew our members were vulnerable as many of us, including myself, have experienced disability hate crime.  We can’t tackle it alone so we decided to create AWARE and liaise directly with local law enforcement officers and specialists on a regular and social basis.”
